Diego F. Lugones
Head of the Department. Application Platforms and Software Systems.
I am currently leading a team of very talented people distributed across Ireland and Germany. The background diversity of the team spans from software and system gurus to bright researchers. This allows us to deliver innovation from its conception and vision to its proof of concept demonstration and product transfer.
My work targets 5 to 10 years innovation of distributed computing systems in general, with specific focus on converged edge clouds in particular. I am interested in understanding how trends in software paradigms and platforms (like microservices, FaaS and serverless), as well as the evolution of hardware and infrastructures (from commodity to accelerators, from centralized to distributed and 5G access), will shape the next generation of clouds and its emerging challenges. For example, the increasing system complexity that will require artificial intelligence (AI) enabled management to provide the predictive and multi-variable orchestration for coordinating services and deliver expected performance.
My capabilities include: Distributed systems, cloud automation/orchestration, machine learning applied to computing systems, network function virtualization, data-driven performance analysis and optimization, design and prototyping for applied industrial research, software development, datacenter networking. Also, leadership and project management.
Before Bell Labs, I worked with IBM on topics related to datacenter interconnects, specifically on hybrid optical/electronic-circuit/packet switching network architectures. I have also worked as a contingent researcher at HP-Labs developing a simulation framework for network communication analysis. I have received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science at the University Autónoma of Barcelona (UAB, Spain) in 2007 and 2009, and a B.E. degree in Electronic Engineer from La Plata National University (UNLP), Argentina.
